I'm no fashion expert, however, I've picked up on a few things behind behind the lens and noticing what tends to photograph the best when it comes to your portraits.

That being said, this is just a guide and not a set of hard rules to follow. If you're still struggling or you have questions about a particular outfit you'd like to incorporate, reach out below and I can help you with the process.

Tips to Consider

Keep it Simple!

You can opt to keep things simple with solid, neutral colors.

Patterns are Ok!

From my experience, patterns can be just fine if they are cohesive.

Mix it Up!

You can also go for only a few people wearing patterns while others wear solids.

Layer | Flow!

Try adding some layers like a vest or jacket. You can also choose something flowy to add some movement.

Accessorize!

You can spruce things up by adding some accessories. Be mindful that it flows seamlessly with the ensemble.

Flattering!

Keeping in mind the comfort aspect, choose something that will be flattering and compliment your body shape. If you have any particular insecurities you can try including layers as mentioned previously.

Coordinate!

Looking at all the tips thus far, coordinating with others in your session is super important to ensure nothing is clashing.

Be You!

Wear something you feel confident in! Showcase your personal style and personality in whatever you decide to wear!

Some Things You May Consider Avoiding

Logos

You may consider choosing options without logos as this can be distracting to the eye.

Ponytails

A slicked back pony may not capture the look you'll want to go for.

Too Casual

Keep in mind the type of session you are going for. You may want to dress up a bit more than usual.

New Style

I recommend doing a "practice run" of the outfits and makeup involved before the day of the shoot.

Headshots | Professional Shoots

These shoots will look a bit different than what was mentioned above.

Ladies

  • Go for neutral basics to mix and match.
  • Bring a flattering dress.
  • Consider wrinkle resistant materials.
  • Focus on the neckline. We want to keep things looking professional.
  • No need for collars, unless it's part of your job specific requirements.
  • Keep makeup basic. See my post regarding makeup tips.
  • Accessorize!

Gentlemen

  • Go for neutral tones avoiding anything too bright in color.
  • Have several options. Choose a variety of ties, shirts, suit jackets, etc.
  • Bring a few basic tees and a basic long sleeve.
  • Groom your hair and any facial hair.
  • Avoid using any face powders or sunscreen.
  • Accessorize! Watches, a nice hat, etc.

All that being said, this is about having fun and making memories!
