Newborn sessions are typically around 4 hours long as I work at baby's pace. I prioritize baby's comfort and needs above everything, and that includes getting the "perfect shot".
It can feel overwhelming trying to make sure everything is good to go for the day of the shoot. I've provided a quick guide to help make things go smoothly.
Schedule
The ideal time to schedule is 6-14 days old. We can absolutely still do photos after this time frame, however babies can startle more easily when being moved between poses. I typically only do newborn session in the mornings (around 10am).
Communicate
If you've scheduled your session with me, I will be asking lots of questions to understand your vision. I have several options for backdrops, clothing, accessories, and props to choose from. You are also welcome to incorporate your own items. That will all be gone over in depth to ensure I provide the best service for you and your family.
Prepare
The day prior to your session, I would suggest getting everything together that you will need to bring. I will be providing a checklist below of some items you may consider bringing with you.
Please note that the studio will be rather warm as to keep baby comfortable. You may consider dressing accordingly.
Overstimulation
Babies can become overstimulated easily. Be mindful of activities before the session. Try to keep things mellow and calm, this includes you as the parent. I know this can be a stressful time, however if you're stressed, your little babe can pick up on that. Try your best to keep them awake prior to the appointment that way they're nice and sleepy when they arrive.
Skin
You can give baby a warm bath the morning of the shoot as this may help calm baby. That being said, please do not try any new soaps as this can cause irritation. Flaky skin and baby acne are very common in newborns. Please do not add any creams or lotions. I will be able to edit skin if you have any concerns, but it is more difficult to edit the shine from oily products.
Clothing
Dress baby in something that is simple to remove. The zipper onesies are some of my favorites. Avoid clothing that needs to be pulled over baby's head as to avoid overstimulation. Make sure to leave the diaper loose (but not too loose) to avoid leaving marks on baby's sensitive skin.
The studio is typically pretty toasty to keep baby warm, so keep that in mind when getting dressed yourself.
Feeding
If you can time a feeding to take place once at the studio, that's great. If you live more than 30 minutes from the location, you'll want to leave room to finish topping them off when you arrive at the studio. If you are breastfeeding, please be mindful of what you are eating as to avoid gassy foods, dairy, and spicy foods. This can upset baby's tummy and make it difficult for them to settle.
Siblings
Depending on the ages of the older siblings, I may ask you to arrange for them to come at either the very beginning of the session or right at the end of the session. Keep in mind, these newborn sessions can be around 4 hours in length, therefore young children may do best in just a small segment of the session as opposed to the entire time. What To Wear
For Mom
Opt for soft fabrics like chiffon or lace, and stick to neutral colors. Whatever makes you comfortable. Don't worry about hiding your post-partum belly; you will be photographed from the elbows up and your baby will be the focus. Minimize accessories and avoid bright or chipped nail polish.
For Dad
Well fitted t-shirts, henley shirts, solid button up shirts, or a textured thermal are all great options. Neutral colors are my suggestion. Please avoid the tank top style undershirts. A pair of well fitting jeans. No need to worry about shoes, as these will not be seen in the photos. Avoid any large accessories such as watches.
For Boys
Simply, a snug pair of jeans and fitted t-shirt, henley, or thermal. Stick to solid neutral colors. Avoid undershirts, bold colors, logos, and graphics.
For Girls
Snug fitting tank tops or a simple dress in a solid neutral color. Avoid bright colors, large logos or graphics. For small children, please wear bloomers under dresses to cover diapers/ underwear. Natural or braided hair works best in this case. Avoid accessories. Just as with mom, no bright or chipped nail polish please.
Mom Break
You deserve it! I know it can be tough to trust anyone with your brand new baby. You chose your photographer for a reason and they know what they are doing. This is your time to sit back and just enjoy watching the process. If at any point you feel uncomfortable with anything, just let your photographer know. Remember, babies can feel any stress coming from their mama, so take this time to relax.
Baby is in charge!
I always work at baby's pace and comfort level.
The day before...
Be mindful of what you are eating if breastfeeding as to avoid gassy foods.
Set aside or pack items that you will be bringing. See below for some items you may consider.
Make arrangements for any older siblings to be picked up or dropped of for just a portion of the session, if applicable.
The morning of...
Bathe baby if desired, but this step is not necessary. Avoid lotions, creams, or oils on baby.
Keep baby awake prior to session if at all possible. See if you can hold off feeding until you get to the session, again, if possible.
