Such an exciting, whirlwind of a time!

Especially if this is your first baby, you may be feeling a bit unsure about your changing body and how to prepare for your maternity shoot. Here I have laid out a few tips on how to make sure you're prepared for your session.

When to Book

With singleton births, it's most ideal to schedule around the 28-32 week mark. If you're expecting more than one bundle of joy, you'll want to move that up to around the 26-30 week mark.

Choosing Your Photographer

You'll want to choose a photographer that shares the style that you desire. Take a look at their portfolio and that should give you a good indication of the style they shoot in and ensure you get the photos that you want.

Consider Location

You'll want to envision what you want your shoot to look like. Each location comes with it's own perks. Depending on the photographer, you may get to choose a variety of settings.

-In Home

Advantage to in home sessions can be that you are already familiar with the space and there's no need to travel or worry about weather.

A downside to this can be that you will may have to tidy your space prior to the photo session.

-In Studio

This option is a very controlled space. No need to worry about cleaning up this space. And no need to worry about weather just like the in home option.

-Outdoors

You can get awe-inspiring and breathtaking views with having your session outdoors.

The downside to this is that planning is dictated around the weather.

Hair | Makeup

If you're able to do so, getting your hair and makeup done professionally can be ideal, however, that isn't always a possibility. If you need help on doing this on your own, check this out.

Nails

Hands can be a focal point to some of the poses as you will be holding your belly to show off the bump. Even if you don't get your nails done for this, making sure they are groomed and trimmed may be something you want to give some attention.

Posing

You've chosen the right photographer for you, trust them! They should help guide you through all the poses and capture you at your most flattering angles.

What to Wear

A must is to wear a "your nude" strapless bra and "your nude" seamless panty! Depending on your setup, you may also opt to bring a black panty and bra set or an ivory panty and bra set to fit in with those all black or all white backgrounds. Some other options you can consider:

  • Dresses. Check out some of my favorite options below.
  • Coordinating outfits for couples/family (In studio, stick to the neutrals)
  • Accessories
  • Props: i.e. ultrasound photo, baby shoes, family heirloom.

Work with your photographer. They may have some suggestions or even some gowns in their studio for use.
